Local Priorities Violent Crime Message

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Violent Crime, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

A man has been sentenced after throwing boiling water over a fellow inmate at HMP Winchester.

Dashiell Mahi, 26, was sentenced on Monday 18 August at Winchester Crown Court.

A jury found Mahi guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following a three-day trial at Salisbury Crown Court in June this year.

The court heard that the assault took place at the prison on the morning of Sunday 3 September, 2023.

Mahi, previously of North Road, Richmond-upon-Thames, approached the victim in a cell and threw a kettle of hot water, causing injuries to the man’s face, neck and shoulder. He then started to punch the victim on the ground before prison officers intervened.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was later taken to a specialist unit at hospital for treatment to his burns.

The incident was reported to police. An investigation found that Mahi had left his own cell with the kettle hidden in a bucket, then waited behind the shower block door, before going to the cell where the victim was and attacking him.

The court heard that Mahi had previous convictions for violence in prison, as well as one for the sexual exploitation of a child.

Mahi was sentenced to eight years imprisonment with an additional two years on licence, after the judge deemed him to be a dangerous offender.

Speaking after the hearing, Acting Detective Sergeant Matthew Chapman said: “This was a premeditated attack on another inmate, and could have resulted in more serious injury.

“Mahi denied carrying out the attack, but it was clear to the jury, through the evidence put forward at trial, that he was responsible.

“Our investigators work closely with the prison to make sure that evidence of any criminal activity is captured early and those responsible brought before the court.

“This result means that Mahi will be behind bars for a significant period of time and not out on the streets.”
